Kuopio, a small city of ~80,000 people, is located in the scenic region of North Savo.
It is a spectacular place to live --- in the midst of fantastic lakes, untouched forests and breath-taking countryside. The city itself is green and beautiful, with lots of character and wonderful people. I find myself falling in love with this place a bit more each day ...

Looking down on campus from Puijo, its easy to see how life here revolves around the lakes. The University of Kuopio is a great place to be working ... great research opportunities, amazing people, and a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. |

This old church (kirkko) sits in a park just around the corner from my flat. Interesting scenery and architecture, along with lots of small parks and walking trails, make Kuopio a great place to just roam around. |
The lakesides ...
With 1000+ lakes dotting the countryside, it is impossible to escape the scenery even if I wanted to. Eye-catching lakesides, like this one in nearby Maaninka, are around every turn.

Some exploring and hiking always produces some lesser-known treasures, like this waterfalls (kanjoni) about 50 km outside the city. |
Countryside at the doorstep ....
Much of the area surrounding Kuopio is agricultural, and it is no trouble to find rolling green meadows and farmlands. Combined with the rich forests and lakes of the region, it is a nature-lover's paradise.
