A few pictures from my visit to Glasgow and the Isle of Arran
The quaint town of Brodick greets the ferry at the Isle of Arran ...
But the majestic hills and mountains in the backdrop are much more commanding.
Brodick harbour, nestled in the lee.
Brodick castle, with the oldest parts dating back over 500 years.
The castle, from another angle, is surrounded by lush green ...
And hosts several beautiful gardens, like this one.
Lots of colourful gems hidden amidst the green.
Brodick is a hub of tourism on the island ...
And the main strip has lots of interesting shops, restaurants and cafes.
Arran is often called "Scotland-in-mini" - because it has amazing coastlines ...
Rolling, green hills typical of the moorlands ...
And looming, rocky mountains reminiscent of the highlands!!
The highest peak on the Isle of Arran, called Goatsfell, pokes out from under the clouds.
Hints of the unique history of this area, like these small castle ruins, are seen all around the island.
Two unique islands - Holy Island (right) and Elsia Claire (left) lie just off the coast of Arran.
Glasgow, on the other hand, is dominated by gothic wonders ... like the City Chambers
My favourite building was the Glasgow Cathedral ...
There is just something about old churches that exemplify history and majesty.
Places like George's Square were so full of history and character ...
That I was even tempted to produce a self-portrait to show I was there!!!
The Necropolis, probably the highest point in the city ... a provoking yet eerie place.
The intriguing jumble of monuments at the Necropolis is well worth the walk.
The Infirmary is far from a modern-looking hospital, but full of medical history.
It's the fine detail of the architecture that is truly breath-taking, like that found here on the City Chambers.
The famous Trongates clocktower holds a dark secret ... this is where the heads of executed criminal were once displayed.
This spectacular fountain, depicting Queen Victoria reigning over her people, sits just outside the so-called "People's Palace" in Glasgow Greens.
But it's the small treasures that catch my attention ... like this 16th century stained glass.
Or the oldest "chippie" in Glasgow, where I just HAD to stop.
But my favourite places to explore were the pubs, where you meet lots of interesting characters, like these ...
... or even us, enjoying a drink with some Canadian friends we met !!!
