Located in the very northeast of Europe, Finland is a great place for birding ...
Birders from all over the world visit here, not only to see the northern species which call exotic places like Lapland home, but the eastern species which breed nowhere else in Europe. With its rich habitat, old-growth forests and beautiful lakes, Finland is paradise for nature-lovers.

Red-flanked Bluetail
A beautiful bird with an equally beautiful voice, this is one of the rarest breeding species in Europe. This one was photographed singing from high in the treetops in the Kuusamo region.

From Newfoundland to Finland ...
Birding has been a hobby (aka lifestyle) for me since 2001 ... Finding, chasing and enjoying birds home in Newfoundland has been a great way to get outdoors, challenge myself, and take a break from the rest of my life. When I learned I would be spending 8 months in Finland studying and working on a research project, I was excited about the opportunity to check out some new landscapes and completely different species.

It has certainly given me the opportunity to see many amazing natural area that I otherwise would have missed, and to find and enjoy lots of interesting and beautiful birds. Eurasian Oystercatcher
This little guy was photographed during my visit to Hailoutu -- the largest island in the Bothnian Bay and just a short ferry ride from Oulu in western Finland.

Reindeer Calf
Of course, birding is a great way to find and enjoy other wildlife ... such as this photogenic reindeer calf from just north of Kuusamo. |
